UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center Central Energy Plant, La Jolla, CA

Providing overall support for the $700 million Jacobs Medical Center Expansion at UC San Diego, Cumming Group is directly responsible for the development of a new 40,000-sq.-ft. central energy plant. The N+1-designed facility will provide heating and cooling to the 745,000-sq.-ft., 418-bed acute care hospital with expansion capabilities to accommodate another one million square feet. The cooling towers will utilize super low sound and silencer technology to maintain a maximum sound power level below 90 dBA, thereby minimizing their impact on the environmentally-sensitive site. The plant will produce 3,900 tons of cooling, include 1,800 boiler HP (62,100 lbs. / hr.), and will be backed up by 7.5 megawatts of emergency power. The project is seeking LEED Gold certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.
