Santa Monica, Calif. – May 21, 2018 – Santa Monica is set to see the construction of its new 28,690-square-foot fire station kick off this summer after receiving final approval earlier this month. Cumming, an international construction consultancy, will be serving as the City’s construction manager overseeing the project, ensuring funding transparency and making sure that the new fire station stays on schedule and within budget on behalf of the City of Santa Monica.
The new two-story downtown station will be located at 1337-45 7th Street and will be more than twice the size of the existing complex, Santa Monica’s oldest fire station. The new fire station will replace the existing Fire Station No. 1, which does not meet current seismic code and cannot accommodate the future needs of the City.
With an estimated construction budget of approximately $30 million, the fire hall will include subterranean parking, 20 dorm rooms for on-duty firefighters, staff offices, restroom and shower facilities, a kitchen and communal dining room, a public community room, and a fitness center with exterior decks. The station will also have seven apparatus bays, equipment storage and repair areas, onsite diesel and unleaded gasoline storage tanks, and specific utility entry rooms, as well as dedicated training spaces for the first responders.
The existing station will remain open until the new building is completed in early 2020 and is aiming to obtain a minimum of LEED V4 Silver certification.
“The delivery of each project on budget, on schedule, and of the highest quality is our primary goal – and our team of local municipal experts bring that mentality to the job site from day one,” said Anthony Sanchez, Executive Vice President at Cumming. “Project delivery is much more predictable when you have a single point of responsibility proactively monitoring risk and holding all stakeholders accountable on behalf of the community.”
Bernards Bros. Inc., a California-based corporation, will serve as the project’s general contractor.
